Understanding the 4.0 GPA Scale

The United States primarily uses a 4.0 grading scale for college and university GPA calculations. This system converts letter grades into numerical points that are then averaged to determine your overall GPA.

How to Calculate Your GPA

To calculate your GPA, follow these steps:

  1. Convert each letter grade to its corresponding grade point
  2. Multiply each grade point by the number of credit hours for that course
  3. Add up all the total quality points
  4. Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours attempted

Example: If you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course:
Total Quality Points = (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 4) = 12 + 12 = 24
Total Credits = 3 + 4 = 7
GPA = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Some high schools use weighted GPAs for honors, AP, or IB courses, where these classes can be worth up to 5.0 grade points instead of 4.0. College admissions typically consider both weighted and unweighted GPAs.

What is a Good GPA?

  • 3.5 - 4.0: Excellent (A range)
  • 3.0 - 3.49: Good (B range)
  • 2.5 - 2.99: Average (C range)
  • Below 2.5: Below average

Most competitive colleges look for GPAs above 3.5, while many graduate programs require a minimum of 3.0. However, admissions committees also consider course rigor, extracurricular activities, and other factors.
