Understanding CGPA in Pakistan

Pakistani universities primarily use the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system on a 4.0 scale, similar to the US system. However, some institutions may use a 5.0 scale or percentage-based grading.

CGPA Grading Scale (4.0 System)

GradePercentageGrade Points
A80-100%4.0
B70-79%3.0
C60-69%2.0
D50-59%1.0
FBelow 50%0.0

How to Calculate CGPA

CGPA is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted across all semesters.

  1. Convert each course grade to grade points
  2. Multiply grade points by credit hours for each course
  3. Sum all quality points and credit hours
  4. Divide total quality points by total credit hours

Example: Semester 1: (3.5 × 15) = 52.5 quality points
Semester 2: (3.8 × 15) = 57 quality points
Total Quality Points = 109.5, Total Credits = 30
CGPA = 109.5 ÷ 30 = 3.65

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

Many Pakistani universities use the following formula to convert CGPA to percentage:

Percentage = (CGPA - 0.5) × 10

For example, a CGPA of 3.5 would convert to: (3.5 - 0.5) × 10 = 30%
